Just a quick note on your question of why we care where TNC gets its money - they have in the past shown poor judgment regarding their funding and self dealing.

The larger issue is one of transparency - NGO's must be perfectly transparent in why they have chosen to work with the private sector, and what the progress has been. This way when a company proudly trumpets their "green" credentials because of a "partnership" that has been forged it can be checked and seen as part of a mosaic, not the whole story.

I worked for a global environmental organization, while there we developed a very strong policy that outlined what information we would need and what committments any company who wanted to partner with us would need to make.

I saw the article as well and thought it was a really thoughtful piece that laid out some important issues that NGO's and companies are wrestling with every day. This BP mess just made those questions much harder to answer.

All good points, in a best of all possible world's. This isn't. We can't teleport ourselves to utopia, we have to crawl there. I've seen first hand way to many extraordinary environmental undertakings by TNC, not to mention the millions of acres of land they've preserved, to suggest they need oversight. The organization's track record allows them a lot of leeway.

RE: Killing Cape Cod Crows. They killed gulls one year, and we all had to duck as dead and dying birds fell from the sky. I think they need to leave nature alone. If the piping plover is meant to become extinct maybe that's part of natures plan!

Octopi? Uh, uh. Don't put that Latin ending on that Greek word. While good old Webster's uses both as plurals, "octopuses" or "octopods" are the more appropriate words for more than one octopus.

As for claimed "recent" findings of intelligence among octopuses (especially conscious intelligence) by some researchers, these discoveries are not new. There were a few folks who knew and studied this and related matters more than three decades ago. See for example early works of and subsequent and most recent research based on that of J. Mather, S. Resler, and J. Cosgrove. Especially J. Mather's continuing work with conscious intelligence.

I can think of a use for the kilobot technology. Cars that drive themselves using the follow-the-leader algorhythm.

Of course this is the usual use of technology which is to replace people. Until we find a way to keep paying them, I'm not so sure we need any more inventions.

Hey Ralphie Boy...
It's a good thing people didn't feel that way about the invention of the printing press, or the internet, or the lightbulb..I donno Ralph, that luddite thing doesn't work too well around the offices of NBN. We love innovation.
